Major Changes

Subsector 454, Non-store Retailers has been removed, in favor of implicit inclusion in mainstream retail sections. Retail groups are no longer marked distinctly as online, direct selling, or stores. The word 'retailer' has been inserted in group titles and the word 'store' removed. Retail groups are now inclusive of virtual, direct-selling, and brick and mortar stores.

For example:

• An optical goods retailer selling contact lenses online is now included under retail group 456130, Optical Goods Retailers, whereas in 2017, it would have been included under 454110, Institutional pharmacies, off-site, mail-order.
• Online sales of health food supplements are now found in 456191, Food (Health) Supplement Retailers, whereas in 2017, would have been found under 454110, Internet retail sales sites.
• Direct-selling bottled water providers is now included with all other retailers of water and beverages.

Other Notable Updates

2017 National-industry 441228 (Motorcycle, ATV, and All Other Motor Vehicle Dealers) was removed and replaced with new National-industry 441227 (Motorcycle, ATV, and All Other Motor Vehicle Dealers).

2017 Industry-group 4413 was renamed from Automotive Parts, Accessories, and Tire Stores to Automotive Parts, Accessories, and Tire Retailers. 2017 International-industry 44131, and National-industry 441310, Automotive Parts and Accessories Stores, were removed. 44133, and 441330, Automotive Parts and Accessories Retailers were added. 2017 International- and National-industries, 44132, and 441320, Tire Dealers were replaced by International- and National-industries,44134, and 441340, Tire Dealers.

2017 Sub-Sectors 442, Furniture and Home Furnishings Stores and 443, Electronics and Appliance Stores, were collapsed into one new Subsector, 449, Furniture, Home Furnishings, Electronics, and Appliance Retailers. Subsector 449, now consists of Industry-groups, 4491, Furniture and Home Furnishings Retailers, and 4492, Electronics and Appliance Retailers. Industry-group 4491 includes 2 new International-industry groups, 44911, Furniture Retailers and 44912, Home Furnishings Retailers. 44912 contains 3 new National-industry groups, 449121, Floor Covering Retailers, 449122, Window Treatment Retailers and 449129, All Other Home Furnishings Retailers. 44921, and 449210, Electronics and Appliance Retailers were also added.

2017 NAICS Subsector 448, Clothing and Clothing Accessories Stores, has been removed and was replaced with a new Subsector 458, Clothing and Clothing Accessories Retailers. 4581, 45811, and 458110, also titled Clothing and Clothing Accessories Retailers, continues to include jewelry, luggage, and leather goods stores.

2017 Subsectors 451 (Sporting Goods, Hobby, Musical Instrument, and Book Stores) and 453 (Miscellaneous Store Retailers) were collapsed into a new Subsector, 459 (Sporting Goods, Hobby, Musical Instrument, Book, and Miscellaneous Retailers).

2017 Subsector 452, General Merchandise Stores has been removed and 455, General Merchandise Retailers has been added.

2017 International- and National- industries 44511, and 445110, Supermarkets and Other Grocery (except Convenience) Stores has been renamed to Supermarkets and Other Grocery Retailers (except Convenience Retailers).

2017 International-industry, 44512, Convenience Stores, was removed. 44513, Convenience Retailers and Vending Machine Operators was added, encompassing 2017 44512, Convenience Stores and 45421, Vending Machine Operators. New National-industry groups 445131, Convenience Retailers and 445132, Vending Machine Operators were added.

2017 Subsector 454, Nonstore Retailers was removed. 2017 Subsector 454 encompasses 4541, Electronic Shopping and Mail-Order Houses, 4542, Vending Machine Operators, and 4543, Direct Selling Establishments. These business types are now implicitly included with storefront retail businesses.

A new Subsector, 457, Gasoline Stations and Fuel Dealers was created. 2017 Subsector and International-industry, 447, and 4471, Gasoline Stations was moved under a new Industry-group, 4571, Gasoline Stations. 2017 International- and National-industries 45431, and 454310, Fuel Dealers, has been moved to 4572, Fuel Dealers.

44711, and 447110 were replaced by 45711, and 457110, Gasoline Stations with Convenience Stores. 44719 and 447190, Other Gasoline Stations, were replaced with 45712, and 457120, Other Gasoline Stations.
