Major Changes

In Sector 51, Information, internet and non-internet -based business activities have been combined. Examples:

• Publishing activities are no longer segmented into internet and non-internet-based publishers. Sub-sector 513, Publishing Industries encompasses both internet and non-internet publishing in the 2022 edition.
• Internet broadcasting, media streaming services and social networks have been combined with radio and television broadcasting stations under Sub-sector 516, Broadcasting and Content Providers.
• Web search portals are now co-located with libraries, archives and other types of information look-up or reference type services (5192, Web Search Portals, Libraries, Archives, and Other Information Services), where in 2017 were found under 51913, Internet Publishing and Broadcasting and Web Search Portals.

Other Notable Updates

511, Publishing

2017 Subsector 511, Publishing Industries (except Internet) has been removed. A new Subsector 513, Publishing Industries combines internet and non-internet publishing together.

2017 International- and National- Industries, 51913, and 519130, Internet Publishing and Broadcasting and Web Search Portals has been removed. The specific publishing classes listed below now contain internet content formerly found within those 2 groups.

515, Broadcasting

2017 Subsector 515, Broadcasting (except Internet) has been removed and replaced by Subsector 516, now called Broadcasting and Content Providers.

New 2022 Subsector 516 contains 2 new Industry-groups, 5161, Radio and Television Broadcasting Stations, and 5162, Media Streaming Distribution Services, Social Networks, and Other Media Networks and Content Providers. Note that 2017 National-industry groups 515111, Radio Networks, and Television Networks, a portion of 515120, Television Broadcasting, 515210, Cable and Other Subscription Programming, 519110, News Syndicates, and Internet Broadcasting, and a portion of 519130, have been moved under the new 5162 (Media Streaming Distribution Services, Social Networks, and Other Media Networks and Content Providers) Industry-group.

517, Telecommunications

Industry-group 5173, Wired and Wireless Telecommunications, has been removed. A new Industry-group, 5171, Wired and Wireless Telecommunications (except Satellite) replaces it. Under 5171, can now be found, 51711, Wired and Wireless Telecommunications (except Satellite) and 51712, Telecommunications Resellers and Agents for Wireless Telecommunications Services.

National-industry 517111, Wired Telecommunications Carriers, now replaces 517311. 517112, Wireless Telecommunications Carriers (except Satellite) has been added.

National-industry 517121, Telecommunications Resellers has been created, as has 517122, Agents for Wireless Telecommunications Services. 2017 National-industries, 517911, Telecommunications Resellers and 517312, Wireless Telecommunications Carriers (except Satellite), have been incorporated into 517112, Wireless Telecommunications Carriers, 517121, Telecommunications Resellers, and 517122, Agents for Wireless Telecommunications Carriers, splitting resellers and agents into separate groups.

2017 NAICS National-industry group 517919, All Other Telecommunications, has been removed. 5178, Industry-group All Other Telecommunications was created, replacing the contents of 517919, All Other Telecommunications.

519, Other Information Services

2017 subsector, 519, Other Information Services, has been renamed to Web Search Portals, Libraries, Archives, and Other Information Services. 2017 Industry-group 5191, Other Information Services, has been removed; however, a portion of its contents has been retained and moved to new Industry-group, 5192, Web Search Portals, Libraries, Archives, and Other Information Services which now contains 51921, Libraries and Archives (formerly, 51912), and 51929, Web Search Portals and All Other Information Services. 51911, and 519110, News Syndicates have been moved to 516210, Media Streaming Distribution Services, Social Networks, and Other Media Networks and Content Providers. 51913, and 519130, Internet Publishing and Broadcasting and Web Search Portals have moved to 5131, Newspaper, Periodical, Book, and Directory Publishers, and to 516210, Media Streaming Distribution Services, Social Networks, and Other Media Networks and Content Providers.
